New World Record March 30, 2010

New World Record March 30, 2010

At 07:20 the 30th day of March 2010, Fast Arie shattered his old record of 77.05 mph (set on April 3, 2009)with a top speed of 82.9 mph at the North American Buggy eXpo, Ivanpah Dry Lake, California!

Flying a Peter Lynn 2.7 Vapor in very high wind while riding an Xxtreme Apexx buggy with Haan wheels!

As the NABX Team was doing damage control to the main event tent Arjen van der Tol, a Dutch rider made his high speed run across the lake bed. Winds were out of the south southwest and fast Arie made his way right in front of buggy town.

Witness knew it was a record run right away and this was confirmed when we saw Arie jumping up and down.

Using four(4) GPS units for accuracy and redundancy, the North American Buggy eXpo recognizes Mr. van der Tol's amazing triumph officially. The GPS units were zero'd before the run, and a continuous video was made, finishing with Mr. van der Tol's exit from the buggy in the bushes on...Read more

NABX & Ozone Kite Project

NABX-Ozone Kite Project

I'm the first to admit that I'm a big Ozone Fanboy. I've been flying and loving their kites since I was first introduced to an Access XC back in 2008. Since then I've amassed a collection of no less than 19 Ozone kites (not including the ones I buy to rebuild).

I've yet to fly a bad kite from Ozone: as far as my experience goes, they range from "good" to "astonishing" - their snow-kites in particular are out-of-this-world.

So, it was only natural that I chose the Manta M3 as the basis for the NABX project.

I can't claim all the credit for the idea, that belongs in no small part to Mark Parker from Kitevibe.

One afternoon Mark and I were discussing our preparations for NABX, and the design for the kite I hoped to have ready in time for the event (featured in...Read more

Aoxomoxoa, we have all felt it.

Aoxomoxoa

Aoxomoxoa, we have all felt it. Whether we fly stunts, fighters, traction, or anything else our childish community of peter-pans has devised to put into the sky. It is that divine feeling, or transcendence that one feels at any age. Pure unaltered bliss that you can only know when you fly simply for the sake of flying. It is aoxomoxa that overcomes you and makes you smile even when you snag a kite in a bush or snap your lines. You are happy because you are doing what you love. Aoxomoxoa lives within the playa, and it calls out drawing everyone from near and far. Although, most of us traveled from all over the United States, this years North America Buggy expo (NABX) brought crews from Canada, United Kingdom, New Zealand, Australia, Israel, and Japan. Whether it was the possibility of setting new land speed records, or just to be surrounded by fellow kiters, we all converged on Ivanpah Lake south of Primm, Nevada.

The reports from the pre-event were of...Read more

NABX TV

NABX TV

NABX 2010 has its own TV this year. Video projection outside of the main tent with a chill out area for everyone to share their pictures and videos of kiting.

NABX TV is a platform for NABX participants to create new and strengthen existing friendships. It's totally participatory; it's about your visual material to show and your time spent hanging in the TV lounge.

NABX TV WANTS YOU! Bring your pictures and videos filled with your experiences from kitebuggy, kitesnowboarding, kitesurfing, art kites, videos on
kitebuilding, kite repairing etc. Hot edits, amateur edits, raw footage - it's all worth it! No promotional material. During NABX, bring images you shoot and project them right away at night.

NABX TV projection will be part of the Saturday banquet.

If wind is talking too loud, NABX TV will move to a hotel room.

NABX TV is mediated by Lenka Chludova. If you only have videos/pictures online, but no more as a Quick Time files you can...Read more

Peter Lynn Newsletter March 2010

Kite-on-a-Stick

Insanity is inherited- you get it from your kids. But in this case it seems to have worked the other way around.

I caught the "make-kite-sailing-work" virus from John Waters (Spin sock inventor, kite traction pioneer) at Lincoln City in 1987. But John probably wasn't entirely to blame; I was just a Petri-dish-in-waiting for this one.

And, unfortunately it might be a genetic predisposition- one of our children has now come down with a bad case.

He's also Peter (called Pete), which name choice might seem to have been a bit uncreative on our part as parents, but we did arrange a distinction. I'm Peter R Lynn and he's Peter S Lynn (and the generation to follow can have a Peter T Lynn and so on )- clever huh?!

Anyway, Pete has a solution to the kitesailing problem which, unfortunately, appears to be a complete answer- unfortunately because I didn't think of it first (forget Cain and Abel, father/son rivalry is the...Read more

Peter Lynn Newsletter February 2010

Newsletter, February '10

The big squash is coming.
The 19th Annual Nelson Kite Festival was last weekend. What a delight to drive to an event rather than fly- to be able to hit the road within 30minutes of starting to pack and to take everything that might be even remotely useful- and there was great wind and great fun with kite friends from forever. What a wonderful world this is!
Except maybe it isn't because I think there's a problem. Forget climate change, asteroid strikes, entropy and runny ice-cream, this is the big one.
For the last 3 years I've travelled to Nelson from Ashburton by the same road in the same Toyota Granvia van. In 2008, from here to Nelson's Neale park was 507km. In 2009 it was 501 km and this year it was just 493km here to there, and 491 km for the return journey.
The world is shrinking!- all the data supports this trend, none (except from a few completely discredited shrinkage deniers) points the other way. At...Read more

I met Brian this last time at the event, he was two wheeling all over the place, no handing, and in general having way to much fun.

Well it looks like since then he's gone and got himself sponsored, and is getting some good seat time in.

In this video he does a suicide gybe tandem, as well as shows what a good time you can have on a dry lake.

Thanks for the vid Brian!
