Kite-on-a-Stick.

Insanity is inherited- you get it from your kids. But in this case it seems to have worked the other way around.

I caught the "make-kite-sailing-work" virus from John Waters (Spin sock inventor, kite traction pioneer) at Lincoln City in 1987. But John probably wasn't entirely to blame; I was just a Petri-dish-in-waiting for this one.

And, unfortunately it might be a genetic predisposition- one of our children has now come down with a bad case.

He's also Peter (called Pete), which name choice might seem to have been a bit uncreative on our part as parents, but we did arrange a distinction. I'm Peter R Lynn and he's Peter S Lynn (and the generation to follow can have a Peter T Lynn and so on )- clever huh?!

Anyway, Pete has a solution to the kitesailing problem which, unfortunately, appears to be a complete answer- unfortunately because I didn't think of it first (forget Cain and Abel, father/son rivalry is the big...Read more

Peter Lynn Newsletter February 2010

Newsletter, February ’10,
The big squash is coming.
The 19th Annual Nelson Kite Festival was last weekend. What a delight to drive to an event rather than fly- to be able to hit the road within 30minutes of starting to pack and to take everything that might be even remotely useful- and there was great wind and great fun with kite friends from forever. What a wonderful world this is!
Except maybe it isn’t because I think there’s a problem. Forget climate change, asteroid strikes, entropy and runny ice-cream, this is the big one.
For the last 3 years I’ve travelled to Nelson from Ashburton by the same road in the same Toyota Granvia van. In 2008, from here to Nelson’s Neale park was 507km. In 2009 it was 501 km and this year it was just 493km here to there, and 491 km for the return journey.
The world is shrinking!- all the data supports this trend, none (except from a few completely discredited shrinkage deniers) points the other way. ...Read more

Brian Holgate Freestyle

I met Brian this last time at the event, he was two wheeling all over the place, no handing, and in general having way to much fun.

Well it looks like since then he's gone and got himself sponsored, and is getting some good seat time in.

In this video he does a suicide gybe tandem, as well as shows what a good time you can have on a dry lake.

Thanks for the vid Brian!

New World Record

New Kite Buggy World Speed Record 77.05 mph

Date line April 3th, 2009
Ivanpah Dry Lake, Primm NV
StateLine Nevada

On Friday the 3rd day of April, on a very windy day, Arjen van der Tol a dutch rider sponsored by Libre Power Kites, riding an Xxtreme Apexx Buggy , while flying a 3.3 Spirit kite, shattered the old record shared by himself and Luc Stanek.

Mr. van der Tol had set the bar fairly high one day earlier by tying the old record held by many years by Luc Stanek at 72.8 mph.

Using four(4) GPS units for accuracy and redundancy, the North American Buggy eXpo recognizes Mr. van der Tol's amazing feet of 124 kph or 77.05 mph!

On Ivanpah Dry Lake Bed in the Mojave Desert where many wind land speeding records have been set and broken, it was just March 26th, 2009 on the same lake bed where Richard Jenkins a Brit, in his Greenbird wind powered speedster went 126.1 mph, shattering the old record of 116mph set ten years earlier by the Iron Duck at 116mph.

Guest/Rider Photo Albums on NABX.net

To the pleasure of all those stuck at home in April, NABX has a long standing tradition of posting event photos to our website. Now we'd like to include our guests and invite anyone who attends the event to create their own albums and post photos of the NABX.

Upload your photos!

Those who have registered since 2007 may login to the members site, click the "Create photo albums" link and upload up to 10 images at once. You may create as many albums and fill them with as many photos as you like. Start an album for each year you attend.

We will continue to link to external web albums, but we encourage everyone to help us build the NABX gallery.

We hope you enjoy the new addition to our site.

Best ride ever!

Man I tell ya what! If you ever do anything you got to go to Nabx! This is the greatest thing imo that you could ever do. I had so much fun with all the flat wind and room that is on the Playa. You could just go as far as you wanted even with over a hundred people there you could still find all the room needed to be alone or do fast runs. Lots of great people to meet lots of kites, buggys to see. I even hit 39mph in my rockville with a 3m my first time there. I can't wait til 2009! 50mph baby. I also loved the shirt, hat, bottle opener,That I got on top of the good food and new friends I got to meet. All in all great time. Don't miss it if I could make it so can you! See ya next year. Be safe and ride on!

Pre-Event 2008

Arriving late at Elmers on thursday, Blake Pelton is ripping across the lake with his twin skin, wind is blowing around 16-18, pure smooth El Mirage butter.

I jump in my buggy, take his kite and get a few runs in before the sun finally sets. Not many people in buggy town yet, but the weather is beautiful, and we're tired, so after setting up the tents, cooking some dogs, we're all out pretty quick.

Friday more people arrive including the Lama himself, Darrin Skinner, Morrie and Kelcie Williams, Spencer and his daughter Emma cutting it up. Chris Shultz comes in a little later bringing us a bag of burgers and we're off to Superior.

Did i mention, the wind was so gusty, the few times i went out, we didn't know whether to pump the kite to keep it from falling out of the sky, or hold on for dear life as we rode gusts across the lake bed. Then it built! By the time we left on friday, it was blowing plus 30!
