Pre-Event 2008
Arriving late at Elmers on thursday, Blake Pelton is ripping across the lake with his twin skin, wind is blowing around 16-18, pure smooth El Mirage butter.
I jump in my buggy, take his kite and get a few runs in before the sun finally sets. Not many people in buggy town yet, but the weather is beautiful, and we're tired, so after setting up the tents, cooking some dogs, we're all out pretty quick.
Friday more people arrive including the Lama himself, Darrin Skinner, Morrie and Kelcie Williams, Spencer and his daughter Emma cutting it up. Chris Shultz comes in a little later bringing us a bag of burgers and we're off to Superior.
Did i mention, the wind was so gusty, the few times i went out, we didn't know whether to pump the kite to keep it from falling out of the sky, or hold on for dear life as we rode gusts across the lake bed. Then it built! By the time we left on friday, it was blowing plus 30!
Superior, ah Superior, why i love this place, so far, so quiet, so peaceful, so big, no people, no motors, no interruptions, just buggy heaven, except maybe that Earl just was not into this weekend, or maybe a bit to excited to really let us have our way.
We arrived pretty late friday night, George and Chip Brown had set up base camp, and were still up playing cards, but the wind, oh the wind, was just howling. The noise was unreal.
We enjoyed hanging and having a few drinks, i curled up in the back of George's truck and went to sleep, others slept on the floor or the couch as no one felt like setting up camp.
Next day, saturday finds the conditions the same, more people arrive and buggy town comes alive, people are buggying around, but the wind, which is gusty and un predictable just keeps building.
Arrivals include Joe Irby, Dave Dickerson, Jim Spiva, Issacc and Anne, Olivia and CJ from San Diego way, Don Swords and his son Joe, Susan and Bo, with Brad Rex and NABX international director, Slawek(Toby)Krauze and our guests Will Mckean and Stupid Dave Roberts. This will be Stupid Dave's second trip out here, and he doesn't disappoint, showing us a new to us power move, called a suicide gybe!
Meanwhile the wind is so high we decide to explore so we head to the far lake to see if we can figure a way to buggy to it and back if the wind changes, we manage to find some smooth places and are really excited about the prospect of buggying to this big as Superior lake bed.
Alas it was not to be, at least not the way we might have liked. We ended up basically sitting around all weekend, till tuesday morning without very much buggy time at all. The winds were as strange as i've seen them. Some sucker type on the last day, but in general we were skunked.
Did we have a good time? Oh yeah, i'd have to say yes indeedy doo, we did in fact. It was great seeing Will celebrate his birthday, and making the magic new nabx best new traction move trophy for two nights running, with very enthusiastic help from all was just the best. We all ate together and helped each other with this and that and in general a good time was had.
Finally, on the last night, since it was apparent we were not going to get genuine seat time it was time for ye ol' buggy train! This year we decided that one lake bed was not enough, and we managed to make it all the way to the far lake, almost the whole way across, before the setting sun forced us to turn back. 15 buggiers, and loads of photographers made the trip. So after a last photo op at the radar reflector in the middle of the far end, we left, and headed back to Superior Buggy Town.
Thanks to everyone who made it happen, it was a hoot. Stay tuned to the forum and this site for news on what might happen to our beloved Superior as the Army attempts to gobble up this pristine land sailing spot. Keep your fingers crossed, and look into what you can do by googling "Ft. Irwin land expansion".
Thanks for reading and much aoxomoxoa to you wherever you might find your kite self.
