I want to thank everyone for making my first trip, but not the last, to the NABX very fulfilling. I believe I managed to meet everyone. I learned a lot of little things to assist me in my new endeavor. One of which I want to tell everyone about right now.
PLEASE DO NOT DO WHAT I DID!
I arrived early on the first day, Tuesday, 28, 2006 at approximately 0730 hours. In as much as I had offered to help with the registration and seeing no signs I drove to the tent being very careful as to stay on what I believed to be the road. Well the road was a bit wet as it was raining slightly subsequently I caused some big ruts. Dean and Meg had to listen to the BLM Ranger rant and rave for a couple of hours do to my ignorance.
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE.
NEVER DRIVE ON TO THE LAKE ANY FURTHER THAN THE GATE WHEN IT HAS BEEN RAINING!
My pickup was filthy so I went to a car wash for a rinse - only $7.00 for a partial wash. The outside wasn't all that bad in as much as it rained on the way home that evening and most of it was washed off in transit. I couldn't figure out why the manager of the car wash instructed me (using a variety of expletives) not to ever come back to his establishment ever again, until I went to get in my truck and looked back into the washing chamber. There I saw 4 of his employee's with shovels in hand digging out an enormous amount of the clay/mud that had accumulated under my truck, which is now covering their conveyor system and not allowing it to work as designed. So unless you want the same treatment, you better heed my words.
On the very last day of the event on a couple of die-hards were at hand. I spent 5 days on the playa and managed not to hurt myself until 2 hours of the last day. I managed to tip the buggy, fall to the ground, and slide about 2 feet. My wife informs me that either she is allowed to put on the ointment or I can't go again next year. So I have to go now, it's time for the real pain to begin, I've got to listen to how she told me to be careful and apparently I wasn't. She loves me dearly, should only last an hour.
